Hockey Skills
A player must possess a certain amount hockey skill in order to be a skilled player. The hockey player that takes the time to practice and master their skills will be the player that scores the goals, stops the shots, and plays the best defense or in other words a great all-round player. Agility, speed, flexibility stick handling, and being on top of your game are essential skills that are important to learn and
practice so they can be applied to your game.
Agility - Your genetic makeup will determine how much agility you possess, the basis must be there for you to utilize to your full potential. Hockey skill drills will dramatically improve your game so your reflexes respond faster on the ice, which will give you the edge on your opponents. There are lots of type of agility drills to help with your training for your speed, agility, and quickness.
Speed - If you want to skate faster than your opponent and beat them in the battles for the puck then you must practice your skating skills
through power skating drills to increase your speed and flexibility on the ice to make your decisions faster and out compete your competition by being ahead of them. It takes all of
practice to skate fast and some people say you have to have the proper mechanics to allow proper skating hockey skills to
improve your speed to your maximum potential. There is more to skating from one end of the area and back, there is side to side and circle movements for changing directions with lightening speed to stay on top of the puck movement to always keep you in the play.
Flexibility - Players skills when it comes to flexibility is very important especially for goaltenders. Goalies virtually need to be able to move in any direction at any time at lightening reflex speed, stretching their bodies to cover all areas of the goaltender's crease to make the save and any possible rebounds. The first save should be made from a standing up stance, but
usually there are rebounds that require a goalie to make more than one save. Stretching exercises are very important for goalies to make there every move very flexible and stress free. Physical Conditioning is a good guide to maintain flexibility, strength, conditioning and in tuned muscles.
Stick handling - All hockey players should practice stick handling hockey skills in handling the puck as puck control is essential to scoring and giving up minimal goals against. The better you handle the puck the longer you will have possession of the puck and the more opportunities you have to score and less opportunity your opposition has to score. Lots of practice during a practice or before a game to do valuable
stick handling skill drills with a hockey stick and a puck.
Being on Top of Your Game - There are hockey skills that come naturally like envisioning
the play of the other team and making the right play at the right time is a skill that is definitely worth working on through proper hockey skills to take the basic skills you possess and take them to the maximum of their potential through practice and more practice. Being on Top of your Game is what a smart player
develops over years of playing and practicing. When you're in a game situation, you will make mistakes and sometimes you will make good plays. From these experiences the most important thing is for to learn what works for you and what doesn't. Realizing your potential then practicing to improve your potential to its fullest is what every great hockey player should strive for and can achieve.
